New Songs for January 2017

19 Jan

We have been working on two great songs so far this term… one is brand new to Otley A Cappella; our version of Joe Cocker’s version of The Beatles ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’! I love how powerful and heavy it is – and there are some lovely harmonies from the many singers on the stage.

Hear his version from the Mad Dogs and Englishmen 1970 tour, which features songwriter and musician Leon Russell who sadly died in 2016.

Here’s our version

For the separate parts please see the HAVE A LISTEN page. The sheet music can be found on the SONGS WE DO page.

We have also re-introduced our arrangement of Elbow’s ‘One Day Like This’- which has been a favourite since we did it all those years ago!

New singers are always welcome! We will continue to meet weekly (with a break for the school holidays in February and April) so we hope to see you very soon. 🙂

Singing through Spring and into Summer 2016

15 May

Hello lovely singers!

It’s a lovely time of year and we have all ready started a new season of songs to get our spirits lifted on a Thursday evening! There is nothing quite like singing together in a group of people and when we start to hear a piece come together with harmonies and dynamics, it is such a great sound! I also enjoy our post-choir drink (usually at The Horse and Farrier), where we get to chat and hang out together. New singers (and those who maybe haven’t been in a while!) are always welcome at The Woolpack Studios on a Thursday – we hope to see you soon.

For those of you interested in performing – we have an end of term concert planned for FRIDAY 15th JULY 2016 at Otley Parish Church. It will be a celebration of Leeds choirs and I am extremely happy to be singing on the same bill as Sally’s Army, Ilkley Moornotes and Good In Parts. We will be raising money for the Joanna Project so it will be an evening not to be missed. WATCH THIS SPACE!

And Your Bird Can Sing

4 May

Our latest song to be A Cappella-ised is from the 1966 album REVOLVER by The Beatles. I think the harmonies they sing are really interesting, intricate and illustrate how singing together with people regularly and who you feel comfortable with can really develop into a unique sound. The Beatles harmonies sound so natural to me and their blend of voices work perfectly…I believe this can happen when any group of people sing regularly together. Everyone has their role and everyone has a contribution to making it sound incredible.

So i was particularly impressed with the speed in which everyone got to grips with the harmonies and specific rhythm of this piece on Thursday. Another testament to how we are developing as a choir. It’s a lovely little song and will be a nice little compliment to some of the more complicated and ‘darker’ songs we have done already. And Your Bird Can Sing is like a ray of sunshine – despite John Lennon claiming it was one of his throw-away songs…I’m not sure I quite believe that!
