Singing through Spring and into Summer 2016

15 May

Hello lovely singers!

It’s a lovely time of year and we have all ready started a new season of songs to get our spirits lifted on a Thursday evening! There is nothing quite like singing together in a group of people and when we start to hear a piece come together with harmonies and dynamics, it is such a great sound! I also enjoy our post-choir drink (usually at The Horse and Farrier), where we get to chat and hang out together. New singers (and those who maybe haven’t been in a while!) are always welcome at The Woolpack Studios on a Thursday – we hope to see you soon.

For those of you interested in performing – we have an end of term concert planned for FRIDAY 15th JULY 2016 at Otley Parish Church. It will be a celebration of Leeds choirs and I am extremely happy to be singing on the same bill as Sally’s Army, Ilkley Moornotes and Good In Parts. We will be raising money for the Joanna Project so it will be an evening not to be missed. WATCH THIS SPACE!

HAPPY 2016!

5 Jan

It really seems that Otley A Cappella Choir is going from strength to strength! Towards the end of 2015, we welcomed several new singers to our Thursday sessions and we did some memorable performances such as the Christmas Tree Festival and The Horse and Farrier.

I can’t wait to see what 2016 will bring!

Our first session back will be Thursday 14th January from 7:30pm at The Woolpack Studios. I really hope you can join us.

Our first song for the new season is one of my favourite indie songs from the 1990s. It’s Ten Storey Love Song by The Stone Roses. It lends itself to some lovely harmonies and has a really uplifting feel to it. Perfect for a new year!

Here is the original

Here is a demo of the version I have arranged… it’s in three parts (Harmony 2 is lower than the lead and H1 is higher)

Hope you like it!

Happy New Year!

16 Jan

It was so lovely to get together and sing after the Christmas break. It was also really great to welcome so many familiar faces as well as a couple of new ones too! Here’s to lots of lovely Thursdays singing together!

In the run up to Christmas, we were very busy preparing all the Christmas songs. I have to say that one of my particular highlights was singing with The Fortnights when they performed War Is Over at The Woolpack Christmas Party at Korks. I hope we can collaborate again in the future… The songs we performed just got better and better the more gigs we did – thanks to your hard work and practise. It certainly paid off. I want us to always feel that confident when we go out to sing so my pledge to you this year is just that! We will take our time learning the songs and perform only those we feel confident with. That said – I would like OAC to have more opportunities to perform… so lets get learning the songs!!!

We started the year with BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER – my arrangement has drawn inspiration from the song writers and original performers Simon and Garfunkel, as well as Aretha Frankin. Paul Simon apparentley said when interviewed about how he wrote the song, “I have no idea where it came from. It came all of the sudden. It was one of the most shocking moments in my songwriting career. I remember thinking, ‘This is considerably better than I usually write.”

Simon and Garfunkel’s version is probably the best known… but here is Aretha’s version for you to listen too…

And here is our version!
